Whitney Chadwick's acclaimed study challenges the assumption that great women artists are exceptions to the rule, who 'transcended' their sex to produce major works of art. While acknowledging the many women whose contribution to visual culture since the Middle Ages have often been neglected, Chadwick's survey amounts to much more than an alternative canon of women artists: it re-examines the works themselves and the ways in which they have been perceived as marginal, often in direct reference to gender. Whitney Chadwick was educated at Middlebury College and The Pennsylvania State University.

She specializes in twentieth-century European and American art and her other books include Myth in Surrealist Painting, Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement, Significant Others: Creativity and

Intimate Partnership (edited with Isabelle de Courtivron), Leonora Carrington: la realidad de laimaginacion, Mirror Images: Women, Surrealism, and Self-Representation (with Dawn Ades), and Amazons in the Drawing Room: The Art of Romaine Brooks. She is a frequent contributor on women’s art to conferences and periodicals and has lectured widely on Surrealism, feminism, and contemporary art in the United States, Canada, and Europe. She is Professor Emerita at San Francisco State University.

Dr Flavia Frigeri is an art historian and curator, currently Teaching Fellow in the History of Art Department at UCL. Previously she worked at Tate Modern, where she co-curated “The World Goes Pop,” among other exhibitions. She is the author of Pop Art and Women Artists, both published by Thames & Hudson. She is currently curating exhibitions for Dia Art Foundation, New York, and MACBA – Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
